Athletes are particularly vulnerable when it comes to injuries due to their high intensity movement in day-to-day activities. One method of treating these injuries that has surfaced among specialists is cryotherapy. WBC, or Whole Body Cryotherapy is used to help athletes alleviate the symptoms of their pain and muscle soreness.
Cold therapy methods, such as soothing a stiff shoulder with an ice pack for 5 – 20 minutes or putting a bag of ice on a swollen ankle, have always been used as remedies for sore muscles; cryotherapy is just an improvement on this form of treatment.

A study was conducted by investigators, examining the Italian Rugby Team in Milan, to see how cold therapy affected their treatment and recovery time. What they found was that WBC was not harmful and did not create negative effects in athletes while reducing inflammatory diseases and symptoms.
Cryotherapy recovery time was found to be shorter than that of traditional healing methods such as ice packs or bags of ice applied intermittently throughout the day. In the life of an athlete, this is crucial because if they can’t play, it’s all over for them.
